Question

How do I talk to my partner about something hard.

Pick a calm moment, not during the fight and not when either of you is exhausted.

Start simple:

“I need to talk about something difficult. I’m not trying to attack you. I want us to understand each other better.”

Then say three things:

  1. What happened, without exaggerating.
    “Yesterday when you said ___…”

  2. How it affected you.
    “I felt hurt / dismissed / worried because ___.”

  3. What you need going forward.
“I need us to talk about this differently / be more honest / make a decision together.”

Try to avoid “you always” and “you never.” Those usually make people defend themselves instead of listen.

A good structure is:

“When ___ happens, I feel ___. I don’t want to blame you, but I do need us to talk about it. Can you tell me how you see it?”

Then be quiet and let them answer. The listening part matters as much as the saying part.

If they get defensive, slow it down:

“I’m not trying to win. I’m trying to make sure this doesn’t keep hurting us.”

If the conversation becomes cruel, circular, or too heated, pause it:

“I want to keep talking, but not like this. Let’s take a break and come back to it tonight/tomorrow.”

The goal is not to deliver the perfect speech. The goal is to be honest without being destructive. Calm, clear, and direct is usually enough.
